Cell Therapy

Biggie Mob

Chiron’s later emergence as “Black” is shaped by the incident with Kevin. The adult Chiron is built like armor: muscular, controlled, indifferent. He has crafted himself into someone who cannot be humiliated in the same way again. The persona is less a reinvention than a defense against the boy who was once exposed to moonlight. This transformation is immediately reinforced through the introduction of “Cell Therapy” by Goodie Mob, the first major rap song that accompanies Chiron so directly in the film. The shift from classical music to rap marks a major turning point in Chiron’s identity. In the first two chapters, “Little” and “Chiron,” the use of classical music reflects Chiron’s vulnerability and the parts of himself that don’t fit into traditional expectations of Black masculinity.

Rap, especially in this context, is tied to dominance, control, and a more rigid performance of Black masculinity. It shows how Chiron has adapted to survive, modeling himself after the men around him and building a harder exterior. The gold grillz, muscular body, involvement in drug dealing, and carefully controlled demeanor all function as protective layers shaped by the internalized homophobia he developed from growing up in such an environment, which he uses to suppress and conceal his queerness.

From childhood, Chiron has been mocked, bullied, and abused for the ways his softness and sensitivity are read as signs of homosexuality before he is even old enough to understand or articulate his own desire. As a result, masculinity becomes not only something he is expected to perform as a Black man, but something he must use to conceal parts of himself. His transformation into “Black” can therefore be read as an attempt to distance himself from the vulnerability associated with his younger self and to suppress the queerness that made him a target.

This is why an intersectional framework is essential to understanding Moonlight. The term intersectionality, coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, argues that the various identities that define a person, such as race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, and nationality, do not operate separately from one another. It highlights how people’s lives are shaped by multiple, overlapping identities, that these identities interact with structures of power in distinct ways, and that no single identity category can explain a person’s life experiences on its own. Moonlight illustrates how Chiron’s multiple interconnected identities ultimately affect the way he navigates life and relationships. His internal conflict emerges precisely at the intersection of these identities, where systems of racism, heteronormativity, and economic marginalization overlap. His Blackness subjects him to stereotypes surrounding masculinity, while his queerness marks him as vulnerable within a community where manhood is tied to heterosexuality and sexual prowess. At the same time, his class position limits his access to stability, safety, and support, intensifying the pressures already placed upon him.
